The High Court has awarded a schoolgirl nearly €5 million in damages for "catastrophic injuries" suffered when she was hit by an uninsured driver.

Shauna Boylan of Glenvara Park, Knocklyon, was 12 years old when she was hit by a car driven by William Knowles, 46, of Jugpark Crescent, Swords. Boylan is now confined to a wheelchair.

Knowles, who had several previous convictions, was convicted of driving without insurance and having no licence.
