Social welfare minister Mary Hanafin faces cuts in benefits, growing dole queues and a looming crisis on pensions

She was pictured walking barefoot on Inchydoney strand with former taoiseach Bertie Ahern and his successor, Brian Cowen, at the height of the Celtic tiger boom and was tipped by insiders as a future leader. However, Mary Hanafin’s star faded rapidly when Cowen shuffled her out of the education ministry and into the less influential social and family affairs portfolio last summer.
