Greens urge adoption of eco-friendly expenses

The Green Party is pressing finance minister Brian Lenihan to base new mileage rates for TDs on a small car engine size to reduce expenses and carbon emissions, writes Niamh Connolly, Political Correspondent.

Lenihan is due to replace the system of unvouched expenses for TDs next month with a system of ‘verifiable’ expenses that are subject to official audit. Under the new system for all deputies, an auditor will have the right to enter TDs’ offices to seek verification of expenses, while penalties may apply to TDs unable to vouch their expenses on request. The expenses are to be published on the Oireachtas website.
