Taoiseach Brian Cowen asked the Green leader John Gormley to allow Willie O’Dea to resign ‘‘in his own time’’ following statements in the Dáil.

But the Greens, in a hardline stance adopted to curtail the damage caused by the party’s support for the minister in a confidence motion the previous day, insisted that O’Dea should stand down immediately.
