The Department of Foreign Affairs has doubled its grant to provide assistance to convicted Irish criminals and those awaiting trial in jails overseas.
Minister Micheál Martin has approved a grant of €30,000 to the ‘hardship fund’, which will go towards providing assistance and basic comforts to some of the over 800 Irish prisoners imprisoned abroad - irrespective of the nature of their conviction.
