GPs providing medical card services to patients are comparable to health service employees and should be allowed to negotiate as a trade union, their union has claimed in documents filed with the High Court.

The Irish Medical Organisation's defence and counter-defence were filed in advance of its High Court showdown with the Competition Authority.

The judgment in the case, which is due to start on May 21, will be key to GPs' ability to negotiate...
