Government’s take of property stamp duty has tripled since 2001

The government collected almost three times as much stamp duty from housebuyers and property investors last year as it did in 2001, according to recent figures released by the Minister for Finance, Brian Cowen.

The government collected almost three times as much stamp duty from housebuyers and property investors last year as it did in 2001, according to recent figures released by the Minister for Finance, Brian Cowen.

Housebuyers and investors paid stamp duty of more than €2 billion on property in 2005 on property, compared to €671 million in 2001, according to the figures, provided in response to a parliamentary question from Labour finance spokeswoman, Joan Burton.
