The government is to review retail planning guidelines that restrict out-of-town retail developments and cap the size of large stores.

The government is to review retail planning guidelines that restrict out-of-town retail developments and cap the size of large stores.

Environment minister John Gormley will announce the comprehensive review in the coming weeks, and new guidelines are expected to come into force early next year.

The move comes as the Competition Authority is due to publish a new report, which is expected to be critical of the existing guidelines.
