The government is to push the banks to move much more quickly to do deals with mortgage-holders in difficulties, with senior ministers increasingly frustrated at the pace of progress on the issue.

The chief executives of the major banking groups will be summoned to meet the Central Bank early this week, government sources say, to be given a clear message that they must move more quickly.
