Government to negotiate "debt brake"

The Government will legislate for a “debt brake” in the spring, Taoiseach Enda Kenny told the Dáil this afternoon.

The Government will legislate for a “debt brake” in the spring, Taoiseach Enda Kenny told the Dáil this afternoon.

Such a measure would set limits on government expenditure. A report in *The Irish Times* this morning quoted German officials saying that such a “debt brake” arrangement could be used in conjunction with a fixed debt repayment plan to reduce total national debt and to limit new borrowing.
