Government to launch action against Medical Defence Union
The government is to launch a legal action against theMedical Defence Union (MDU) in which up to €400 million could be at stake.
The union said on Friday that the government had agreed to “take ultimate responsibility for historic [medical] liabilities'‘.
This has been hotly disputed by government sources. In response to the union, a spokesman for the Department of Health said that HealthMinisterMaryHarney intended tolaunch a legal challenge to theMDU's refusal to cover compensation awards against its members or former members. “We simply won't allow the MDUtowalk away fromtheir responsibilities,” the spokesman said.
