Government backs away from ESB sale

UPDATE: ESB unions vow to fight any sale of part of the company even after the state said it won't proceed with a sale of a minority stake in ESB as previously signalled.

One third of the proceeds of asset sales will be available for use to fund job stimulus, public expenditure minister Brendan Howlin said.

The UNITE trade union has vowed to continue its opposition to the breakup of the ESB through the sale of any of its parts.

This followed the government's announcement that it won't proceed with a sale of a minority stake in ESB as it prepares to sell state assets up to a value of €3 billion.

However the government did refer to the possible sale of parts of ESB's capacity.
