A plan to massively increase Ireland's foreign aid to €946 million has been dropped because the government believes it cannot be justified at a time of budget cutbacks.

The country is spending €600 million this year on its aid budget, but would have to increase this to an estimated €946 million in the next budget to meet the UN target.
