Granola bars have been a staple in my lunchbox ever since I was a kid and looked forward to whatever variety accompanied my sandwich. Despite occasional flavour variations - peanuts, apple and cinnamon, maple syrup - they always consisted of toasted oats studded with chocolate chips.

Even now, my slightly more grown-up lunchbox often contains some sort of oat-based bar. But let's be realistic; granola bars these days can hardly qualify as a ...
