Scandals involving so-called spiritual gurus are nothing new. Last year, John Friend, founder of the Anusara school of yoga, was accused of turning his group into a wiccan sex cult. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, a slew of leading yoga figures were similarly accused of abusing their influence over students. John Lennon even had a famous falling out with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, meditation guru to the Beatles, in 1968.
