John Osborne’s 1956 play had an explosive effect on English theatre.
Its anti-hero, the educated, disaffected young working-class Jimmy Porter, was the original angry young man. At the time, Jimmy’s towering, anarchic rage against the staid mores of British middle class society shocked audiences; the test of the play lies in whether that rage still rings true.
