The man who was nicknamed ‘America’s mayor’ in the days after September 11, 2001, has joined the race to become America’s president.

Rudolph Giuliani, the Republican former mayor of New York City, last week filed a statement of candidacy and declared in a television interview ‘‘I’m in this to win’’.

Giuliani’s announcement means that the 2008 presidential election could become an all-New York battle.
