Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton is planning to change the law to allow births, deaths and marriage records dating back 100 years to be put online.
These records are currently legally off-limits, with the public only able to access edited versions of the documents at the General Records Office (GRO) in Dublin.
But Burton is bringing forward a new bill in the coming months to improve public access to the detailed genealogical records.
