Gaza’s crowded history

The blockade of the Strip since 2007 is seen as illegal and inhumane by many around the world, writes Conor McCarthy

The Gaza Strip is one of the most densely populated regions on earth, with around 1.5 million inhabitants in its 224 square kilometres. (In comparison, Ireland covers an area of 84,000 square kilometres.)

The small area of land borders Egypt in the south-west and Israel in the north, east and south-east.

The main population centre is Gaza City, from which the Strip takes its name.
