Gardai train for two years

There are about 12,250 gardai serving in the state. These include almost 10,000 rank-and-file gardai and detectives, about 2,000 sergeants and inspectors, 150 superintendents, 50 chief superintendents and ten commissioners.

There are about 12,250 gardai serving in the state. These include almost 10,000 rank-and-file gardai and detectives, about 2,000 sergeants and inspectors, 150 superintendents, 50 chief superintendents and ten commissioners.

Gardai train for a period of two years, which includes five phases. During phase one they spend 20 weeks training in the Garda College, Templemore, Co Tipperary. In the second phase they have three months experiential training – without any powers – in a garda station.
