Prison officials have prevented ''very serious crimes by helping Gardai to listen to inmates' conversations on their illegal mobile phones.
The operations involve using technology to identify prisoners who are using mobile phones in their cells and then passing on their details to Gardai to allow them to carry out electronic surveillance.
