Prison officials have prevented ''very serious crimes by helping Gardai­ to listen to inmates' conversations on their illegal mobile phones.

The operations involve using technology to identify prisoners who are using mobile phones in their cells and then passing on their details to Gardai­ to allow them to carry out electronic surveillance.
