Garda overtime could be significantly curtailed or even scrapped amid moves to impose European employment law on the force.

Gardaí have traditionally had an exemption from the European Working Time Directive, EU legislation which limits the hours any employee can work.

However, the Department of Finance has received fresh legal advice stating that this exempt ion ‘ ‘may not be sustainable’’, according to briefing documents been seen by The Sunday Business Post....
