Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan resigns, Nóirín O'Sullivan appointed as interim commissioner

UPDATE: Nóirín O'Sullivan has been appointed as interim Garda Commissioner and a full-scale investigation into bugging in Garda stations has been launched by the Government.

Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan has resigned and informed Justice Minister Alan Shatter of his decision earlier this morning.

In a statement this morning Callinan said that recent developments were “proving to be a distraction from the important work that is carried out by An Garda Síochána on a daily basis for the citizens of the State in an independent and impartial manner.”
