Garda Commissioner Noel Conroy ordered an inquiry into the obtaining of phone records by a private detective who sought to expose the harassment of the McBrearty family in Donegal.

The Sunday Business Post has also learned that Conroy, in his former role as head of crime and security, was overseeing the inquiry into the McBreartys as early as autumn 1997.
