Furious junior health minister threatened to quit over Reilly plan to slash mental health budget

Kathleen Lynch, the junior health minister, threatened to resign at a fractious cabinet sub-committee meeting last Monday week.

The meeting was attended by both Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore, as well as the senior health minister Dr James Reilly and officials.

Lynch was furious at plans by Reilly to cut the mental health budget, one of four areas of health policy for which she is responsible.
