The spectacular collapse of the Munster Bank over 120 years ago might lead one to believe that when it comes to matters of finance, nothing really changes.

The details of the affair included enormous insider loans, careless lending to property developers and plain fraud. It was said that the smaller the sum borrowed, the more exacting the bank was, but as one insider put it, ‘‘they were anything but careful in larger transactions’’....
