Franco-German pact puts tax back on table

France and Germany are trying to harmonise their corporation tax systems – the most inefficient in Europe – by 2013, and Ireland needs to be on its guard

‘We have asked our ministers of finance and the economy to prepare proposals . . . so that from the beginning of 2013 we could have a common tax on companies in terms of the tax base, as well as in its rate for German companies and French companies,” said President Nicholas Sarkozy in his joint press conference with Chancellor Angela Merkel last week Sarkozy never seems to have the issue of corporation tax too far from his mind.
