France angers Turkey as EU talks draw near
Turkey may not join the EU for at least another decade, but it has just experienced its first European row with the French government.
The French prime minister, Dominique de Villepin, warned in a radio interview last week that accession negotiations withTurkey could not start until it has recognised the existence of the Republic of Cyprus - an EU member state sinceMay 1, 2004.
