On the international scene, one genre that is bucking the trend of tumbling prices is dog-painting.

Bonhams’ 27th annual Dogs in Art Sale in New York made US$810,000, a stronger result than last year.

Works featuring sporting and hunting breeds made up nine of the sale’s top ten lots, but the painting which sparked the most competitive bidding was a charming work by William Bruce of a wide-eyed White English Terrier sporting a pinkbow....
