The political career of former SDLP leader Gerry Fitt, who died last Friday aged 79, showed just how easily and quickly support for political leaders can evaporate in the North.

Fitt, like his SDLP colleague Paddy Devlin, came from a Labour background and ran for election to Stormont on Irish Labour and Republican Labour tickets.
