Former Fine Gael sports minister Bernard Allen is to be made financial watchdog for the allocation and spending of funds by national sporting organisations.

Allen was appointed to the Irish Sports Council by the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Leo Varadkar, and will take on the new position on a pro bono basis.
