Former Anglo executives will not get custodial sentences

Patrick Whelan, Anglo Irish Bank’s former head of lending in Ireland and William McAteer, the bank’s former head of finance will not be given custodial sentences.

Patrick Whelan, Anglo Irish Bank’s former head of lending in Ireland and William McAteer, the bank’s former head of finance will not be given custodial sentences.

Judge Martin Nolan said that it would be “incredibly unjust to impose custodial sentences”.

Speaking at today's sentencing hearing, Judge Nolan said he will ask the probation service to assess the two men’s suitability for community service.
