Market forecasters are cautiously optimistic that the European Central Bank (ECB) will sanction another halfpoint interest rate cut when it meets this week, despite mixed signals from the bank about its intentions.

While previous reductions were clearly signalled by ECB president Jean-Claude Trichet, this time there has been no such signal, leaving forecasters unsure of what will happen.
