‘Football’ in Croke Park

Ian Kehoe’s article on the FAI (18/ 3/07) referred to the Ireland v Wales match played in Croke Park on March 24 as ‘‘the first occasion that a football match has been played at Croke Park.”

24th March, 2007

While it may be the first soccer match to grace the field, it is by no means the first football match - just ask Mick O’Dwyer, Paidi O Se or Pat Spillane.

Football is a term used in England to describe soccer, where it is the only game in which a football is used. On this island, football means Gaelic first.
