Dublin's biggest publican, Louis Fitzgerald, has been granted planning permission for a 189-bedroom hotel beside the landmark Joel's Restaurant on the Naas Road in west Dublin.

However, the decision by South Dublin County Council to approve the construction of the hotel has been appealed to An Bord Pleanála by local residents.

Last December, Fitzgerald sought permission to redevelop the site and build a hotel of up to five storeys in height.
