I'm a qualified engineer who blagged his way into a job in Waterstones in the 1990s. It was in Harrods, where we were selling a lot of expensive books.

When I transferred to Waterstones in Dublin, the attitude was, 'If the book is published, someone in Ireland will want to read it, so we'd better have it'. You could go around the world in a bookshop back then.
