Dublin City Council has made a confidential settlement with a fireman who claimed that he suffered hearing impairment as a result of not being given protective equipment on duty.

A ‘‘significant settlement’’ was agreed by the council, which is likely to prompt a series of further claims by serving and former fire service workers, according to well-placed sources.

Neither party is permitted to disclose the details of the settlement.
