Fine Gael has moved to protect hundreds of small rural schools threatened by a Department of Education report which favoured larger schools with 80 pupils or more.

Fine Gael has moved to protect hundreds of small rural schools threatened by a Department of Education report which favoured larger schools with 80 pupils or more.

Fine Gael, whose TDs have been lobbying strongly in support of small schools, have insisted that no schools will be amalgamated unless they specifically request it.

The Fine Gael view was strongly put at a recent cabinet committee meeting - an encounter that has been described in government circles...
