Irish rugby players will have a stronger hand in their contract negotiations with the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) after the passing of the new Finance Bill. The bill will give them greater freedom to play for non-Irish clubs without financial penalty.

Under the current law, athletes have to spend the last year of their careers in Ireland to qualify for tax relief on their career earnings.
