Once upon a time, science fiction made promises. In the future, we would live in utopian societies where war and greed were extinct, fly chrome-plated jet cars through steepled skyscrapers and colonise far-flung planets as other Earths. But these marvels never materialised. The future didn't happen, and our expectations adjusted accordingly.
