For most of the government's term in office, Fine Gael TDs could sympathise from a safe distance with their Labour colleagues, who were the ones taking the hit.

But all that has changed over the past six months, with opinion polls and then the local elections showing that a significant number of the sitting 70 Fine Gael TDs won't be coming back after the next election.
