Fianna Fail senator Mary White was vociferous in her defence of artists' exemptions.

“I remind everybody that just over 36 years have passed since Mr Charles Haughey introduced the tax incentive scheme for artists living in Ireland,” she said. “The inspirational decision to introduce the scheme was an example of leadership at its best.

“Not much respect was paid to artists and works of art before 1969.
