Special protection is being given to 70 prisoners in Mountjoy jail due to feuding between two Dublin and Limerick gangs, with staff claiming that the Irish Prison Service (IPS) has ‘‘lost control’’ of the facility.

The number of prisoners under protection at the Dublin jail is at an unprecedented high, and represents almost one-fifth of the inmates.
