Felipe VI, proclaimed King of Spain today, said the country needs to strengthen its democratic institutions as he pledged to maintain its unity.

“We have a great country, we are a great nation and we believe and confide in her,” Felipe, dressed in the military uniform of the commander of the country’s armed forces, said in the National Parliament in Madrid today after swearing an oath of loyalty to the 1978 constitution.
