Fashion, says Peter O'Brien, has a cycle. But not the 'seven year' cycle we're accustomed to hearing about, but rather a cycle that produces sociological insight. When a fashion is new, he says, it appears ridiculous, and we abhor it. Then, it becomes fashionable, and we covet it. Soon, it appears normal, and we buy it. And finally, it appears dull, and we discard it.
