Extra tax returns ‘cancel out’ €1bn nursing home bill

Buoyant tax returns and investigations by the Revenue Commissioners will “cancel out" the €1 billion bill for nursing home charges, according to finance minister Brian Cowen.

Buoyant tax returns and investigations by the Revenue Commissioners will “cancel out" the €1 billion bill for nursing home charges, according to finance minister Brian Cowen.

Cowen would not estimate the cost to the taxpayer of the nursing home refunds, but Minister for Health Mary Harney has predicted a “ballpark'‘ figure of €1 billion.
