Experts hit out at childcare tax relief

The government's proposed strategyofproviding tax reliefs for parents using childcare will come under attack in an expert report to be launched next month.

Government consultants Indecon have recommended a limited scheme of tax breaks for working parents. It would be available at the standard tax rate and kick in after spending around €1,000 on childcare.

The relief would have a fixed upper limit. But a new report by the Centre for Social and Educational Policy will conclude that many countries are moving away fromchildcare provision based on tax relief on grounds that it is inequitable. The report commissioned...
