EU's Barroso pledges full support for Ireland

UPDATE: Enda Kenny has said he found "great common ground" with European Commissioners on Ireland's stability and growth agenda for its EU presidency.

European Commission President José Manuel Barroso has pledged "full support" for Ireland as it starts its EU presidency, which he said would be good for Ireland and for Europe.

He said the Commission was urging member states to stick to the spirit and the letter of the statement made by the European Council in June regarding the direct recapitalisation of banks.
