Eurozone economy contracts 0.3%

UPDATE: The euro declined as a report showed the euro zone economy contracted by 0.3 per cent in the last quarter of 2011 from the previous quarter, as exports and consumer spending slowed.

Eurozone economy contracted.

The euro zone economy contracted by 0.3 per cent in the last quarter of 2011 as household spending and exports slowed, according to the latest economic report.

The EU's statistics office has cut to 1.4 per cent from 1.5 per cent its estimate for growth across 2011.

Exports fell 0.4 per cent in the final quarter, the EU's statistics office said. Household spending fell 0.4 per cent also.
