New car registrations across Europe fell by 5.9 per cent in May, as most car brands saw declines and Peugeot Citroen's sales fell 13.3 per cent.

The performance, thought to reflect rising joblessness, marked a 20-year low for car sales.

Other brands in a double-digit decline included Renault (down 10.1 per cent) and GM (down 11 per cent).
